A young Englishman, wrongly imprisoned by the Nazis for espionage, is determined to escape. He meets fellow inmate Peebles who sets out to teach him how to play rugby. Unable to comprehend the rules of this unfamiliar game at first, the Englishman eventually becomes a star player on his prison team. When they’re finally released, he goes on to captain England in one of the greatest upsets in sporting history. A classic sports film set against a harrowing historical backdrop starring Michael Caine and Quentin Crisp as prisoners of war forced by Nazi captors to form a rugby team so their captors can profit from wagers taken by corrupt officers against other military teams in Germany.
